Clubs and Societies - King Edward's High School for Girls

We provide over 70 high quality clubs and activities each week.

The school offers a wide range of clubs and activities, including top-class music-making, dance, drama and more, all run by highly-qualified staff or outside experts. In addition, we offer Speech and Drama in preparation for LAMDA, and Music lessons in preparation for Associated Board examinations, at an additional charge.

I have participated in various musical groups such as flute group, concert band and junior choir which introduced me to playing in a group, helped my confidence, and it was really rewarding to play in front of many people too. Afro Caribbean Society (ACS)

ACS is a society to discuss cultural topics around African and Caribbean cultures including experiences, food and history. Inspirational speakers from the communities also regularly come in to discuss important topics and present on their own culture and experiences.

Art Attack

Art Attack is a club managed and run by our Sixth Form art students. They provide a range of stimulus for Lower School students engaging them in a range of materials, processes and techniques. Students are also welcome to use the Art Department to produce work for competitions, use computers for research or to complete homework.

Athletics

Students of all ages train in track and field events at our state-of-the-art athletics track, coached by a former England Heptathlete.

Badminton

Badminton is open to everyone, from beginners and those who simply enjoy playing socially and having fun with their friends, to more experienced players who train and compete regularly outside school.

Basketball

A KES staff member coaches the KEHS Club which is open to everyone.

Camera Club

See yourself as the next David Bailey or Dianne Arbus, or just want to take the perfect selfie? You’ll love Camera Club, where students from novices to experienced snappers learn a range of skills, in-depth knowledge of photographic equipment and practical Photoshop techniques.

Ceramics Club

Unleash your artistic potential and get creative in clay! Producing a variety of work using different hand building techniques such as coiling, low relief and slab-building. Inspiration for our work will come from a range of Artists and Art Movements and genres.

Chess Club

Chess Club welcomes everyone from budding Boris Spasskys and Judit Polgars to total novices. Students play informally while some join the team and take part in external competitions against rival schools. Our weekly visiting chess coach gives students the chance to test their skills against the best. See you there, check mate!

Choirs

KEHS has 2 choirs: Chamber Choir for Year 10 and above, and Lower School Choir Year 7 - 9. Choral Society is a 100 strong four-part choir drawn from pupils and staff of both schools. Girls from Year 9 upwards are welcome.

Classics Club

Ready for an adventure back in time? Classics Club introduces students to ancient mythology and culture through story-telling, discussion and craft.

Cricket

Cricket, played all year round and has a growing following of all ages at KEHS. We enter an indoor league in the winter months and have many fixtures with other schools in the summer term.

Cross Country

Students of all paces enjoy the relaxing and bonding experience of running through our beautiful surroundings, including the Vale and Cannon Hill Park.

Current Events Club

Looking for a broader perspective on local and global issues? At our weekly Current Events Club hosted by the Principal, Sixth Formers interested in current affairs discuss topical news stories, and analyse controversial media coverage.

Dance

Dance has a cult following at KEHS, with many girls taking part in dance rehearsals at lunchtime and after school. The annual Dance Production, performed at the Ruddock Performing Arts Centre is one of the hottest tickets in the KEHS calendar.

Debating Club (Junior and Senior)

Debating a wide range of topics, from vegetarianism to alien life, Debating Club offers excellent opportunities for students to share opinions, develop public speaking skills, and take part in exciting competitions.

Dental Society

Want to know about the world of teeth and topics such as ‘Dentophobia: Why people fear the Dentist? This student led society will certainly have your teeth chattering!

Drama

Whether you crave the spotlight on stage, or prefer to be part of the backstage production team, we offer fabulous opportunities to create exciting live theatre, make new friends and gain a wealth of new skills.

Economics Society

Is it all about demand and supply? Economics Society offers Sixth Formers a chance to consolidate their subject knowledge and learn about Economics in the wider world. Guest speakers are invited to give insightful talks on business and economics issues.

Fencing

Our fencers are coached by the President of the British Academy of Fencing at the twice-weekly sessions, and enjoy considerable success. The Club is open to all ages and abilities.

Film Appreciation Society

Pupils with a passion for cinema, watch and discuss a wide range of films at this popular weekly club. Everything from genres, to actors, to filmmaking techniques is examined.

Football Club

Perfect for anyone who enjoys a kickaround and wants to build their footballing skills in a supportive atmosphere, the Club is open to all ages and abilities.

French Club

How do you say “Do not pass Go. Go directly to jail” in French? Here’s where you’ll find out. Playing memory games, word searches, Monopoly, Cluedo, Scrabble and more in French, gives students invaluable practice in speaking the language and broadening their vocabulary.

Gardening Club

Students are welcome to attend on an ad hoc basis, where they can learn how to grow and nurture a range of different fruits and vegetables. Crops are chosen with their ease of care in mind and activities continue whatever the weather, thanks to our fabulous polytunnel.

Geocaching Club

At Geocaching Club, you have the opportunity to engage with a truly 21st Century hobby using GPS technology to locate hidden objects using clues, by solving puzzles and a number of other techniques. You will be taught how to geocache safely and effectively and join a like minded community!

Geography Club

Geography Club is an exciting club where you can learn and extend your knowledge of geography beyond the curriculum through fun quizzes, kahoots, games and much more.

German Film Club

Want to find out more about Frankfurters and Vollkornbrot? Come along to this fun, informal club where everyone can discover more about German culture, practise the language and learn some new vocabulary through watching films.

Gymnastics Club

Students learn new skills and make up sequences at our thrice-weekly Gymnastics Club, with many representing the School at competitions throughout the year.

History Discussion Group

This group helps Sixth Formers extend their knowledge and put modern day events in historical context with stimulating debates on topics such as the Gilets Jaunes and the potential for a second French Revolution. The students themselves set the agenda for each session, selecting a journal article on a topic with significant implications for modern politics and current affairs.

Hockey

Hockey is open to all year groups and experience levels, during the autumn and spring terms. We enter county tournaments and play schools throughout the MIdlands.

Horrible Histories

From cut-throat celts to vile victorians, Horrible Histories Club gives students a chance to learn more about some of the stories and fascinating facts about the bits of the past that are too unusual to make it onto the regular syllabus. We do this through quizzes, games, small-group activities, and clips from the TV show.

Instrumental ensembles and chamber music

Students can join a guitar ensemble if they play guitar at Grade 2 standard or above. No audition is required for the Recorder Ensemble. Chamber ensembles are available for students who want to play with other instruments.

Lifesaving Club

Students learn first aid, water safety and rescue skills, and work towards Royal Lifesaving Society Awards.

Lower School Drama Club

This lunchtime club is open to KEHS & KES dramatists from Year 7 and 8. Anyone can come along and enjoy making friends, playing drama games and creating exciting theatre.

Martial Arts Club

At our weekly club, girls learn various forms of martial arts, develop their fitness and build their confidence. (No previous experience needed).

Maths Team Challenge

Do you enjoy puzzles, challenges, and the thrill of solving a mystery? This stimulating club is for students who love to stretch their minds and solve challenging problems.

MedSoc

Perfect for budding doctors, nurses and healthcare professionals, MedSoc, is a student-led society that explores different career pathways and current issues in the medical world.

Middle School Drama Club

This lunchtime club is open to KEHS & KES dramatists from Year 9 and 10. Anyone can come along and enjoy making friends, playing drama games and creating exciting theatre.

Model United Nations

Fancy trying your hand as an international stateswoman, politician, senior figure or negotiator? Students can attend conferences, act as delegates and take part in discussions, representing different countries. This offers them practical experience of policy-making and pressing global issues, while developing their public speaking, debating, negotiation and consensus-building skills.

Music is a major element of life at KEHS and girls have many opportunities from the moment they arrive at the School.

Netball

Netball is popular among all ages and abilities in the autumn and spring terms, when our teams take part in many regional and national fixtures and county tournaments.

Philosophy Club

Crafting a defence of cannibalism or exploring the concept of free will - just the sort of conundrums you might find yourself discussing at Philosophy Club. Open to everyone, it focuses on a different topic each week, giving students the chance to have their voice heard and challenge other people’s philosophical arguments. Perfect for anyone with a curious mind or an appetite for speculative enquiry and jolly good fun talking about weird ideas.

Physics Club

With many KEHS girls studying STEM subjects to university level, Physics Club is a popular option. Various projects have been undertaken in recent years, including participating in the UK Young Physicists competition and the British Physics Olympiad Experimental project.

Psychology Club

The Psychology Club is a group for all year groups that provides an opportunity to learn more about psychology. The club discusses a wide range of human behaviour and the psychological research and theories behind it. Topics have included memory, personality, aggression, and stress. Students are encouraged to suggest psychological concepts they would like to learn more about.

Quill

KEHS has produced scores of award-winning writers and poets, including the Birmingham Young Poet Laureate. Students can let their minds run wild, pick up technical tips and get feedback on their ideas and writing styles. Students collaborate or work independently as their creative juices flow.

Reading Group

No one can write well or consider themselves cultured without a rich heritage of reading. At our bi-monthly Reading Group, led by the Head of English and the School Librarian, students meet to discuss a range of fiction titles, from classics to contemporary novels.

Rounders

Rounders is a hugely popular summer sport, with senior players having the opportunity to play in the KE Foundation rounders competition.

Schools’ Challenge

Discover Schools’ Challenge, a national knowledge contest for teams of four! KEHS excels at Junior and Senior levels, reaching national finals. It's fun, builds knowledge, and fosters friendships. All quiz enthusiasts welcome, with many Old Edwardians advancing to University Challenge and Mastermind fame. Join now to explore American Presidents, African dictators, and Wonders of the World!

Senior Dramatic Society

This lunchtime club is open to KEHS & KES dramatists in year 11 and Sixth Form. Anyone can come along and enjoy making friends, playing drama games and creating exciting theatre.

Spectrum Society

Spectrum Society meets once a month to discuss issues relating to the LGBT+ community. Open to everyone who wants to help create a more inclusive, welcoming and friendly society.

Spoken Word Poetry Club

Unleash your poetic talent and join Spoken Word Poetry Club with Birmingham Poet Laureate and Old Edwardian, Jasmine Gardosi! Develop communication, performance, and self-expression skills with confidence. Attend open mic poetry nights in Birmingham and follow the footsteps of former members who became the Young Poet Laureate of Birmingham.

Sustainability Society

Become a catalyst for change at our vibrant co-ed Sustainability Society, in collaboration with KES. Together, we drive impactful events, educational initiatives and community outreach, empowering students to actively contribute towards a sustainable future within our schools and the wider community.

Swimming

We offer two exciting swimming sessions each week! The first caters to competitive swimmers preparing for inter-school galas, while the second provides a fun and safe environment for novices to learn essential swimming techniques and for others to simply enjoy their time in the pool.

Tennis

Get ready for thrilling tennis action and join our Tennis Club with sessions three times a week for all ages and abilities. Improve singles and doubles skills, compete in exciting summer tournaments like the Fry Cup with other King Edward VI Foundation schools.

The Fitness Suite

The fitness suite is open to all Year 9 and above each lunchtime. Equipment includes treadmill, cross trainers and a strength and conditioning area.

Ultimate Frisbee

Experience the excitement of Ultimate Frisbee—a tactical sport open to all students! Push your limits with intensive fitness training and drills. Enjoy social games or competitive play, learn accurate disc throws, and join our national teams. Tournaments held throughout the year, including women-only events. Ultimate Frisbee—unlike anything you've imagined!
