Mrs Lucy Williams
Mrs Lucy Williams
Lucy Williams is the Group Head of Conduct, Policy and Whistleblowing at HSBC plc. Prior to this role, Lucy was the Executive Committee member and Head of Regulatory Compliance for HSBC UK Bank, responsible for overseeing the commercial, retail, wealth and private banking operations of HSBC in the UK. She held this role from 2013. She was the first senior executive to relocate from London to Birmingham in 2015, ahead of the opening of the Bank’s new UK head office there. She still lives locally with her family and is a strong advocate for the region. She says of this move that it taught her much about the place that banking has in a community and the role that teams play in reflecting the values of HSBC on those around them. She’s proud to lead a global team from a regional base and thinks the connectivity it gives them to our customers and colleagues improves their performance.
Lucy joined HSBC in June 2013 from Prudential plc where she was the Director of Group Compliance. Prior to that, she was Head of Compliance at Aviva Life UK. Her earlier career included a range of roles over some years at the Financial Services Authority, in the Markets Division and Retail Supervision, and managing ABN AMRO’s Government Affairs team in Brussels.
Outside of work Lucy supports a range of globally-renowned arts organisations with a regional base – she is a Board member of the Royal Shakespeare Company and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. Lucy is proud to Chair the Independent Schools Governing Body of the King Edward VI Foundation Birmingham and be a Board member of the wider Foundation. Together, the Foundation’s schools reflect the multicultural and diverse population of the city, and are committed to excellence and accessibility.
Lucy is married with three children, all of school age.

Mrs Amanda Smith
Amanda Smith came to read Law at the University of Birmingham and never left! She qualified as a Chartered Accountant with PwC with experience in the Audit & Assurance Practice and Corporate Finance followed by a career at FTSE 100 Compass Group Plc.
Amanda is the Vice Chair of Governors at an Outstanding maintained primary school in her home town of Sutton Coldfield, where she also Chairs the Finance and Resource Committee, and sits on both Teaching & Learning and Staffing.
Together with her husband she is also a supporter of the Assisted Places scheme. Outside interests include being a keen theatre supporter, being a patron of the Birmingham Hippodrome, Royal Shakespeare Company and Town Hall Symphony Hall locally as well as the Old Vic.
Mr Obaid Choudhry
Mr Obaid Choudhry
Obaid Choudhry was a pupil at King Edward’s School before going on to read Natural Sciences at St John’s College in Cambridge.
He is a Director at Rothschild & Co, having joined the firm in 2011, and now advises both public and private clients on a range of corporate finance matters including mergers and acquisitions. Prior to this, Obaid completed his ACA with Deloitte and is a chartered accountant.
He also sits on the Board of the Health Exchange, a community health and well-being focused charity based in Birmingham.

Mrs Katherine Coates
Katherine Coates was a pupil at King Edward VI High School for Girls from 1970 to 1977 and went on to study Jurisprudence at Somerville College, Oxford. She joined Clifford Chance LLP in 1981 where she has spent her entire legal career, becoming a partner in 1990, head of the financial institutions practice in London and of the global insurance practice. She also sat on the firm’s Partnership Council for several years and chaired its audit and risk committee. She advised on a wide range of transactional, regulatory and governance matters for insurers and other financial institutions.
Following her retirement from the partnership in 2021, she remains as a consultant to the firm and has established a portfolio of non-executive director roles. These include chair of risk at Talbot Underwriting Limited, part of the AIG group, chair of risk at Great Lakes Insurance UK Limited, part of the Munich Re group, non-executive director at Phoenix Re Bermuda and non-executive director at UK Endorsement Board (a government arm’s length body responsible for endorsing IFRS for use in the UK). Katherine is also a member of the Council at Imperial College London and sits on its audit and risk committee. She mentors a number of senior employees in commercial and not-for-profit organisations.
She is married to Andrew, a professor in space physics at UCL, and has twin daughters.
Ms Philippa Eddie
Ms Philippa Eddie
Philippa Eddie became a member of the Independent Schools’ Governing Body in 2023. A commercial finance specialist at the Infrastructure and Projects Authority (Cabinet Office), Philippa advises Government departments on projects in the energy, transport, water and digital sectors. She has worked in infrastructure finance for 30 years, as an adviser, lender and principal, with previous roles at HM Treasury, EY, Deutsche Bank/Morgan Grenfell and Morgan Stanley.
As a strong supporter of developing talent, Philippa has been mentoring for 25 years and coaching for five years, and is an ILM Level 7 qualified Executive Coach and Mentor. Her areas of expertise for coaching are financial services, professional services, the civil service and non-executive directors, and she also has a special interest in coaching people who are neurodivergent.
Philippa is a non-executive director on two boards: Regen SW and the EMCC (European Mentoring and Coaching Council).
She has an MA in Engineering and Economics from the University of Cambridge and an MAEd in Applied Linguistics from the Open University. Philippa is also studying part-time for a PhD at Oxford Brookes Business School.

Chris Hosty was educated at KEHS Edgbaston before obtaining a degree in Mathematics from York University. After completing her PGCE at Nottingham University, Chris taught in Bristol and at Edgbaston High School. Chris joined the Maths department at KEHS in September 1987 and retired in July 2018. She was appointed to the ISGB in March 2020.

Mr Barnaby Lenon
Barnaby Lenon taught at Eton for 12 years, was Deputy Head of Highgate School, Headmaster of Trinity School Croydon and Head of Harrow (12 years). He has been a Governor of 22 schools.
Barnaby is Chair of Governors and joint founder of the London Academy of Excellence school in Newham, East London, one of the most successful state schools in England. He is Professor of Education at the University of Buckingham, Chair of the Independent Schools’ Council, a Trustee of the Yellow Submarine charity, and a consultant to the Robertson Foundation which sponsors schools in New York and South Africa (amongst other things). He is a member of the Ofqual standards advisory group.
He has recently published two books, Much Promise: successful schools in England and Other People’s Children: what happens to the academically least successful 50%?
Mr George Marsh

George Marsh was educated at King Edward’s School and the University of Sheffield (civil and structural engineering).
He spent most of his career with construction company Galliford, including 10 years as Chief Executive. He has since been involved as non-executive Chair of a number of construction companies, including leading MBOs and PFI Projects, and has been actively involved in industry affairs for 40 years. A former Chair of Governors and Pro-Chancellor of Coventry University, George has recently served as a trustee of the Engineering Council.
George served in the TA Royal Engineers for 30 years, ultimately commanding the RE Specialist TA as a Colonel and working on projects on the worldwide military estate and is currently a Board Member of the West Midlands Reserve Forces and Cadets Association.
An active Deputy Lieutenant of the West Midlands, George previously served as Vice-Lord Lieutenant and acting Lord-Lieutenant.
Mr Ian Metcalfe OBE
Mr Ian Metcalfe OBE
Ian Metcalfe, a qualified solicitor, retired as managing partner of international law firm Wragge & Co in 2014 after eight years in post. Prior to managing the business, Ian was a corporate partner at the firm for 14 years, acting for several substantial public and private companies and private equity houses on a wide range of transactions.
Ian now pursues a “portfolio” career, with a range of non-executive appointments, combining his interests in sport and business. Ian is Chair of Commonwealth Games England and a non-executive director of the global waste management and environmental services group TRRG Holdings Ltd, a joint venture between the Dutch Terberg Group and the Spanish Ros Roca Group.
In the public company world, Ian is the senior independent Non-executive Director and Chairman of Remco at Mercia Technologies plc and a Non-executive Director and Chairman of Remco of Arena Events Group plc.
A double rugby blue, Ian represents Cambridge University RUFC on the Council of the Rugby Football Union, having previously served nine years on the Board of the RFU, chaired the Professional Game Board and sat on the Board of ER 2015 Limited, the organising body for the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

Mr Qamar Riaz
Mr Qamar Riaz
Qamar Riaz was born and brought up in central Birmingham. He started his career teaching in a large East London comprehensive in 2001.
Originally a history teacher, he has held leadership roles at middle and senior level since 2003. These roles have all been in areas of significant economic disadvantage in London, the Black Country and the West Midlands.
He was appointed to his first headship in 2016 and has been Headteacher of King Edward VI Handsworth Wood Girls’ Academy, a non-selective school in the King Edward VI Foundation, since September 2019.
He is resolute in his drive to eradicate inequality and promote social mobility.
Currently Qamar is also Chair of a social mobility charity and Trustee at a Multi Academy Trust.
Ms Gayatri Sehdev
Ms Gayatri Sehdev
Gayatri Sehdev is an alumna of King Edward VI High School for Girls. She studied Law at Downing College, Cambridge and completed her MBA (graduating as a Palmer Scholar) at The Wharton School, Philadelphia.
Gayatri currently works for Refinitiv, a Blackstone-backed financial services business, where she is both Assistant General Counsel and Company Secretary. Prior to serving on the ISGB, Gayatri served as a board observer for CARIE (a charity in Philadelphia that advocates for the rights of the elderly) and a governor of a federation of schools in London.
Dr Neil Shastri-Hurst
Dr Neil Shastri-Hurst
Neil Shastri-Hurst is an Old Edwardian of King Edward’s School, who is dual qualified in Medicine and Law. After graduating from the University of Nottingham, he spent a number of years as a Medical Officer in the Royal Army Medical Corps before specialising in trauma. His most recent medical appointment was as an Honorary Consultant Trauma Co-ordinator for the Major Trauma Service at University Hospitals Birmingham. In addition to his clinical work, Neil was appointed a Medical Member of the Medical Practitioners Tribunal in 2016.
Since 2019, Neil has been a member of No5 Barristers’ Chambers, specialising in healthcare, coronial, and personal injury law. He is a qualified mediator and a member of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority Appeals Committee.
Outside of work, Neil maintains a keen interest in veterans’ affairs. He was appointed a member of the West Midlands Veterans Advisory and Pension Committee by the Minister for Defence People and Veterans in 2021.
Prof Hywel Thomas
Prof Hywel Thomas
Hywel Thomas is Chair of the Foundation Board. He is Emeritus Professor of the Economics of Education, University of Birmingham and was the Director of the Centre for Research in Medical and Dental Education at the University. He was Head of the School of Education for 10 years, from 1993-2003.
His research and writing included studies on resource management in schools (DFE/OECD), the school workforce (DfES), smoking prevention strategies (EU), the career paths of graduates (HEFCE), designing a curriculum for training medical general practitioners (RCGP) and evaluating selection processes for medical speciality training (DH).
Hywel has undertaken work for The World Bank, UNESCO, the British Council and the Department for International Development (DfID). He has been Education Adviser to the British Council and specialist adviser to the OECD.

Mrs Kirsty von Malaisé
Mrs von Malaisé has been Principal of King Edward VI High School for Girls since September 2020, and is Chief Master & Principal designate of KES and KEHS. Educated at music school, conservatoire and University of Cambridge, Mrs von Malaisé began her career teaching English in London state schools, before becoming Deputy Head at Putney High School.
As Headmistress of Norwich High School, she led the school to be awarded ‘Independent Girls’ School of the Year’. The recipient of a transformational bursary for her own education, she is committed to ensuring that our Assisted Places scheme remains strong. Her interests include music and mountain-walking.

Mr Martin Lea
Mr Lea is Vice Principal (Academic) at King Edward VI High School for Girls. He started off his career at King Edward VI Five Ways as a Teacher of Chemistry and Information Technology, before joining KEHS in 2015.
Prior to taking up his post at KEHS he was Assistant Headteacher at Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School. He is committed to outdoor pursuits and often helps with Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award and has led overseas trips to Morocco and Brazil. In his spare time, you will find him walking or climbing.

Mrs Sarah Shore-Nye
Mrs Shore-Nye is Vice Principal (Pastoral) and DSL at King Edward VI High School for Girls. She has dedicated her career to working at KEHS, both in academic and pastoral roles, working as Head of English before becoming Vice Principal Pastoral.
Mrs Shore-Nye is committed to the unique value of a selective, girls’ education and her approach to pastoral care is led by her extensive knowledge of the particular needs of bright, curious, developing young women. She sits on the Girls’ School Association national pastoral and safeguarding committee. In her spare time she enjoys sketching, art history and is a reader for Birmingham Talking Newspapers for the blind.

Mrs Helen Kavanagh
Mrs Kavanagh is the Assistant Head (Pastoral) and Deputy DSL at King Edward VI High School for Girls. She is also an enthusiastic teacher of Classics (Latin and Greek). Mrs Kavanagh joined KEHS in 2004 and has held a number of positions in the school. She was Head of PSHE from 2008 to 2012 and Head of Classics from 2012 to 2023, also holding the post of Head of Year in the Sixth Form from 2021-2023.

Mr Andrew Duncombe
As Assistant Head (Community), Mr Duncombe is responsible for the school’s day-to-day arrangements and many of the school’s events. He has various staff roles, and has enjoyed helping re-establish the school’s House system and implement a new approach to service education.
Mr Duncombe arrived at King Edward VI High School for Girls in 2010 as Head of Geography, after spells in that role at two other independent schools in the region, and after beginning his career ‘across the drive’ at King Edward’s School. His wider interests include travel, theatre visits, rugby and cricket.

Mrs Sangha is the Director of Enrichment at King Edward VI High School for Girls. She oversees the school’s exciting and varied enrichment programme, including all clubs and societies, educational visits, and outdoor pursuits. She is passionate about providing students with opportunities to learn and grow beyond the classroom. She believes that co-curricular activities are essential for pupils’ development. They provide them with the chance to explore their interests, develop new skills and build confidence.

Mrs Whitehead is the Director of Sixth Form Studies and a teacher of Biology at King Edward VI High School for Girls. She is committed to supporting Sixth Form students both in their pastoral welfare and academic studies, alongside many extracurricular and enrichment opportunities that develop their character so they are well placed to flourish as tomorrow’s leaders.

Mrs Jo Bullock
Mrs Bullock is Director of External Relations at King Edward VI High School for Girls, King Edward’s School and the King Edward VI Foundation. She previously worked for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents for 15 years, starting out as a Press Officer and holding the role of Executive Head of Awareness and Education (encompassing the charity’s policy and communications departments) at the time of her departure.
Among her career highlights have been coordinating a year-long programme of activities to mark RoSPA’s centenary, and being shortlisted in the Regional Press Awards and Mind Journalist of the Year Award during her early career as a journalist at the Cambridge Evening News. Mrs Bullock is an Accredited PR Practitioner (CIPR) and during her spare time can often be found watching cricket or on a campervanning adventure with her family.

Mrs Zoe Robinson
Mrs Robinson is Bursar (Finance and Estates) at King Edward’s School and King Edward VI High School for Girls. She previously worked at King Edward VI Sheldon Heath Academy (KESH) as Director of Finance and Resources for 7 years and before that worked at KPMG as a Senior Manager in Risk Management, following time in audit.
Among her career highlights have been co-ordinating the construction of a complete new build school on the KESH site which involved liaising with school staff, architects, the construction company and decant specialists, and implementing a new finance system when KESH moved from local authority control to financial independence. Mrs Robinson is a Chartered Accountant (ACA) and spends her spare time on the golf course pursuing this newly found hobby, following many years playing hockey.

Mrs Jenny Butterworth
Mrs Jenny Butterworth
Mrs Butterworth is Bursar (Operations) at King Edward VI High School for Girls and King Edward’s School. She is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (FCA) who previously trained and worked with KPMG for 14 years. Her work there involved leading on a variety of local and international clients in both the areas of audit and transactional service work.
Prior to her role across both schools, Mrs Butterworth was Assistant Bursar at KEHS, where she has been a regular point of contact for both parents and pupils alike. In her spare time, she is likely to be on a rugby sideline anywhere in the country supporting her teenage boys.

Mrs Adelaide Bailey
Mrs Adelaide Bailey
Mrs Bailey is the Development Director at King Edward VI High School for Girls and King Edward’s School. A member of the Development and Alumni Relations Office since 2014, she now oversees a team that has raised over £29 million for the two schools, principally for Assisted Places, as well as state-of-the-art facilities and learning support.
Mrs Bailey is an active member of the Institute of Development Professionals in Education, and led a community engagement and fundraising appeal which won the 2018 TES Independent School Financial/Fundraising Initiative of the Year Award. Before joining King Edward’s, she was a student at the University of Birmingham and subsequently a speaker at the Graduate Conference for Europe. Outside the office, Mrs Bailey is a DIY enthusiast and is currently re-upholstering a rocking horse for her daughter.
