Landmark GCSE success reinforces KEHS position as top academic school in the West Midlands

Upper Fifth pupils at King Edward VI High School for Girls have delivered a record-breaking performance in their GCSEs, achieving the highest results in the school’s history, and reflecting the consistent position of KEHS as one of the leading schools in the country.

This year, the proportion of results at grade 9 reached a landmark 69%, a phenomenal achievement grounded in the school’s stimulating and supportive environment, and rich and ambitious academic, co-curricular and pastoral programmes.

Headline results for 2025 are:

  • 9s: 71%, a record! (2024: 62%, 2023: 59%)
  • 9/8s: 91%, a record! (2024: 84%, 2023: 85%)
  • 9-7s: 97% (2024: 95%, 2023: 97%)

Mrs Kirsty von Malaisé, Chief Master & Principal of King Edward VI High School for Girls (KEHS) and King Edward’s School (KES), said: “It is impossible to overstate how exceptional this year’s GCSE results are. They are truly a testament to the hard work, talent and determination of our Upper Fifth pupils, inspired by expert teachers and with the support of friends and family. We are proud to see continued excellence and a new milestone being reached – with pupils achieving the highest-ever proportion of grade 9s and grade 9/8s in the school’s history. I send my warmest congratulations to all our pupils, their families and our dedicated staff.

“People will often ask how results such as these are possible, and perhaps assume wrongly that KEHS must be a ‘hothouse’. Anyone who visits the school knows that this is demonstrably untrue. We focus first and foremost on creating a supportive, inclusive environment in which pupils flourish; we offer our pupils a myriad of opportunities to enjoy exceptional creative and sporting pursuits; our renowned culture of scholarship and rigour of teaching is also paramount. It is the embedded interrelationships between these facets of school life that enable our pupils to consistently achieve their best. I wish our Upper Fifth every success as they begin their Sixth Form journey and embrace the exciting challenges ahead.”

Subject highlights

Impressive milestones were achieved in newer subject areas. The first cohort of KEHS pupils to study GCSE Mandarin as a new subject achieved outstanding results, with 100% of the Upper Fifth cohort awarded a grade 9. In the second set of GCSE Computer Science results, 67% of pupils achieved a grade 9 and 96% secured grades 9-7, a testament to the growing strength of the subject and the impact of the school’s investment in digital learning. In GCSE Design and Technology, also receiving its second results, 67% of pupils achieved a grade 9 and 89% a grade 9-7.

In the Classics, pupils achieved exceptional results, with 100% grades 9/8 in Greek and Latin. What makes the Greek results particularly exceptional is that the course was studied off-timetable – pupils choosing to pursue it in addition to their usual timetabled subjects, demonstrating remarkable commitment to their studies. Pupils in GCSE French also excelled, with 79% achieving a grade 9, while in Geography, 100% of pupils attained grades 9/8. In Physics, 90% of pupils achieved grade 9/8, as did 89% in Religious Studies, and in Art 100% of pupils achieved a grade 9-7.

Last week, KEHS celebrated outstanding A Level results, with 43% at A*, 78% at A*/A and 95% at A*-B.
