Unprecedented GCSE success for KEHS Upper Fifth

Pupils at King Edward VI High School for Girls (KEHS) continue to demonstrate exceptional academic performance, with remarkable GCSE results across a diverse, and broadening, range of subjects.

Note: the figures in this press release were updated on 13 September 2024 to reflect some changes in the grades achieved.

This year, the proportion of results at grade 9 reached 60% for the first time.

The 2024 headline results are:

  • 62% of grades were 9s (2023: 59%, 2019: 59%)
  • 84% of grades were 9-8s (2023: 85%, 2019: 82%)
  • 95% of grades were 9-7s (2023: 97%, 2019: 93%).

Of the total cohort of 95 pupils, 85 pupils (89%) took 10 GCSEs. Fifteen pupils achieved 10 straight grade 9s.

Kirsty von Malaisé, KEHS Principal, who will become Chief Master & Principal of KEHS and King Edward’s School (KES), in September, said: “This year’s GCSE results are outstanding, and our Upper Fifth pupils have every reason to be incredibly proud of their achievements. We celebrated record-breaking results last year and to once again see our pupils setting a new record – 60% grade 9s for the first time – is exciting. Congratulations to all our pupils, their families and our dedicated and inspiring staff, who have co-created such remarkable outcomes.

“Our pupils have maintained superb results across a broadening range of subjects at the school. We firmly believe that the breadth of academic choice that will stimulate our pupils’ individual intellectual curiosity, supported by a renowned co-curricular offer in a supportive environment, is the key to our pupils’ continuing success.

“I extend my best wishes to our Upper Fifth as they start their Sixth Form studies and grasp all the new opportunities that await them beyond GCSE.”

This is the first cohort to have taken GCSE Computer Science at KEHS, with 65% of these pupils achieving a grade 9 and 95% achieving grades 9-7. This lays strong foundations for A Level Computer Science, which is being introduced as a new course in September. The first GCSE Design and Technology cohort also achieved impressive results with 92% receiving grades 9-7. Both the Computer Science and Design and Technology pupils were the first to benefit from the new £3m Design Centre at KEHS, reflecting the school’s steadfast commitment to enabling girls to succeed in such subjects.

In the Classics, both Greek (100% grade 9) and Latin (85% grade 9) recorded fantastic results. History pupils also excelled, with 79% achieving a grade 9, while in Music, 100% of pupils attained grades 9-8. In Chemistry, 67% of pupils achieved a grade 9, as did 62% of Drama pupils.

Last week, KEHS announced a stellar set of A Level results with 39% of grades at A*, 80% at A*/A and 95% at A* – B.

An exploration of Ancient Greece

From the very first day to the last, we found ourselves entirely submerged in both modern and ancient Greek culture, from participating in a couple of chaotic dances to being taught (and quizzed) on different objects we hunted for in the museums.
