Stephen Campbell, former Chairman of the Independent Schools Governing Body died suddenly on Monday 5 October.

Stephen attended King Edward’s School from 1971 to 1978 and studied law at Liverpool University. He came from a family of many Old Edwardians including his father, who was also the KES School Doctor, his brother, two uncles and two sons. His mother, sisters and daughter attended King Edward VI High School for Girls.

Stephen had a successful career as a barrister in Birmingham and combined this with a deep commitment to King Edward’s and to the Foundation. He was a Governor of the Independent Schools Governing Body (ISGB) and of the Foundation from 2000 until 2015, and served as Bailiff of the Foundation and as Chairman of ISGB from 2004 to 2008. In 2009 he became the first Chairman of the King Edward’s School Birmingham Trust, a position that he held until January of this year

Stephen was clearly a figure of great significance in the school’s recent history, not least as he oversaw the move to greater accessibility through the provision of Assisted Places. He was a true champion of our schools.

All of the school community extends its deepest sympathy to Stephen’s family.
