On Monday and Tuesday this week, Thirds geographers were introduced to geography fieldwork and data collection techniques. They ventured into Selly Oak to examine the characteristics of the urban environment and worked in small groups to survey the housing and assess the environmental quality of two contrasting roads within the area. As a follow-up to the trip, classes will examine the significant changes which have taken place in Selly Oak over time, and the information gathered will be used to examine the impact of the decline of industry, the growth of the University of Birmingham and the process of ‘studentification’ in the area. Despite the cold, the groups worked well and an enjoyable time was had by all!
