School Sport Magazine compiled a list of the top 200 sporting schools, based on results data from more than 4,000 schools. The annual list, which covers girls’, boys’ and mixed schools in the independent and state sectors, is based on performance in 20 different sports and more than 120 different national competitions. Throughout the year, PE departments share their fixtures and scores with School Sport Magazine which are tallied to generate the top 200 list.
Phil Tusler, publishing editor of School Sport Magazine, said: “This has been another remarkable year for competitive sport in schools and King Edward’s School deserve their achievement. The list unashamedly reflects and celebrates competitive achievement in a range of sports and honours those schools that take competition especially seriously.”
In 2024, KEHS celebrated an outstanding year of sporting successes, highlighted by National Finals in cricket, squash, tennis and badminton, with 3rd place finishes for both the U14 tennis and badminton teams.
Last term alone, 97 fixtures were played, with over 210 pupils proudly representing KEHS. Netball teams shone brightly, with the U14 team winning their county tournament to qualify for Regionals, the U15 team securing a big win in the National Bowl second round, and both U12 and U13 squads advancing to Round 4 of the National Cup.
Hockey also brought plenty of excitement, with the U14 team reaching the Regional Semi-Finals and the U18 senior team making a strong showing at their Regional Finals. Meanwhile, the U14 badminton team triumphed in five out of six matches to progress in the National Cup.
In cricket, the U13 team achieved an incredible third place at the National Indoor Finals at Lord’s, placing them among the top five out of 1,000 schools competing nationwide.
This year’s successes are also reflected in the individual achievements of Indira, who is part of the Warwickshire Women’s County Cricket Emerging Player Pathway, Gloriosa, selected for the British Fencing GBR Cadet Squad, Tanishka, ranked in the top 15 for her age group in tennis, and Anoushka, ranked 11th in England for U17 women’s singles badminton and 35th in the country in the senior category.
Sarah Blanks, KEHS Director of Sport, said: “Being ranked among the top 30 best sporting schools in the country for the first time is a fantastic achievement for King Edward VI High School for Girls. Sport plays an integral role in school life, and this recognition highlights the dedication, talent, and teamwork of our pupils, staff, and coaches. I am incredibly proud of all the pupils who have competed with such passion and commitment, and we look forward to continuing to build on this success in the years ahead.”
