KEHS students again received a host of awards at this year’s Withington Model United Nations conference. The conference was opened by guest speaker Lizzy Burden who is a producer for the BBC’s Politics Show and a reporter for The Times newspaper. In her speech she stressed the importance of accessing news from different sources and always engaging with people who have different opinions to get a more informed view of the world.

After the opening speech, our delegates joined their various committees to debate the issues and pass resolutions on how to address a variety of problems facing the world community. In conjunction with KES, we sent delegations representing India, Russia, Bangladesh, South Sudan, Iraq, Israel and Vietnam. Our delegates discussed wide ranging questions such as whether countries should adopt voting systems based around proportional representation and whether countries should make a commitment to allocate at least 5% of GDP to health care.

At the end of the conference the prize winners were announced and our India delegation won the most prestigious award of “Best Delegation”. Congratulations go to Renee Chang, our representative on this delegation who was commended for her role representing India on the Youth Committee. Further congratulations go to the following:

 Sophie (Israel) who won outstanding delegate for her work on the Hispanic Committee;

 Sarah (Russia) and Kiran (Russia), who were highly commended for their role;

 Zahra (Iraq), Jaahnavi Vietnam) and Shevanii (Bangladesh) who were commended for their role as delegates.

Well done to all the girls who attended the conference. We are now looking forward to our next conference which will be held at Malvern St James School next term.
