On Tuesday 14th January, Dr Stephen Burwood spoke to Sixth Form A level Religious Studies students on the theory of functionalism and its role in the mind/body debate. This theory states that, rather than focusing on what the mind is made of, we should be evaluating what a mind actually does. The discussion was very interesting and enabled students to think beyond the A level specification considering, for example, how the theory of functionalism applies to AI and some animal species. The Religious Studies Department would like to thank Dr Burwood for giving up his time and travelling from Hull, where he lives and lectures at the local university.
