On Thursday 6th and Friday 7th December, students in the Lower Fifth attended two enrichment lectures on the subject of China in the world economy. The first talk by University of Birmingham Professor Robert Elliott, provided a detailed evaluation of US-Chinese economic relations and the reasons for the ongoing trade war between the two nations. This was an informative lecture and outlined how China is moving from its position as a global exporter of raw materials to a creator of new technologies. The second talk by Professor Alessandra Guariglia focused on the Chinese ‘One-Child Policy’ and its effects, notably upon Chinese demographics and the saving habits of Chinese families. Both talks provided a detailed and unique glimpse into the politics and economics of the Chinese state, vital learning for GCSE and A Level students.
