The Sunday Times published its Parent Power supplement on 26th November naming KEHS as its West Midlands Independent Secondary School of the year. Alastair McCall, editor of The Sunday Times Schools Guide, Parent Power, said: “King Edward VI High School for Girls wins our West Midlands Independent Secondary School of the Year award for the second time in three years off the back of some outstanding examination results in the past summer. They were good enough to put the school back at the top of the regional academic rankings, but more importantly they represent a personal triumph for the girls concerned, who have now progressed on to the next stage of life with the wind in their sails thanks to the fantastic education they received here. The Sunday Times highlighted our school’s academic success with the comment: “Academic success is illustrated by notching up 59% of all GCSE grades at the top 9 grade, compared with the average in England of 4.7%. The school outperformed all comers in the region at this level and was second only to Concord College, near Shrewsbury (catering for a largely international student cohort) at A-level.” Mrs Clark was keen to emphasise that the school does not value solely academic laurels “but also successes in music, drama, sport and in our work for charity, which is an important part of our ethos”. Alistair McCall went on to comment: “While the school is academically rigorous, success in all areas of life is celebrated and the opportunities afforded to the girls are extensive. Children excel regionally and nationally in everything from poetry to debating, astrophysics to badminton, archery to philanthropy. The end products are well rounded girls, equipped to make an impact on the world once they leave school, confident in themselves and the possibilities that life will present.”

The Holi event was brought to life on the KEHS field last Friday. We raised over £500 for the Wings of Hope charity which supports the education of children in India and Sierra Leone.

Changemakers Live

On Friday 24 April, I was proud to host the school’s very first Changemakers Live event in the PAC: a joint student-led school conference built around intellectual curiosity and communicating ideas, inspired by the concept of TED talks.

Tolkien Lecture: Cricket as Business, Culture and Entertainment

On Tuesday 28 April, the Ruddock Performing Arts Centre was the venue for the second Tolkien Lecture since the series resumed following its pause due to the pandemic. It was a pleasure to continue this much anticipated programme of talks, named in honour of one of the most distinguished alumni of King Edward’s School, J. R. R. Tolkien.
