Lower Sixth pupils publish new medical journal

Last term, Nandini, Oishani and Jitya launched the first edition of Under the Scope, a magazine designed to give pupils across the school a platform to share their interests surrounding the medical field. We sat down with the Sixth Form creators to find out more about the process and their inspiration behind creating the journal, which can be read here: Under the Scope – The Future of Medicine.

What inspired you to create the journal?

We all have a shared interest in medicine and thought that creating a magazine would be a fun and informal way to provide other members of the school community the opportunity to share their passions. It is also a great way to bring pupils from different year groups together, feeling a sense of accomplishment when they see their work published in a magazine.

How did you go about creating the journal?

The first step was to think of a topic that we thought lots of people would be interested in writing about. We wanted to keep it broad to ensure that it could be accessible for all year groups, so we decided upon ‘The Future of Medicine’. After approval from teachers, we sent out a brief to the year groups we thought may like to take part and started editing the articles into the magazine format. To give readers a sense of allied healthcare, it was important that other fields besides human medicine were showcased, such as veterinary medicine and dentistry.

What are you hoping readers get out of reading the journal?

Our main goal was to share our interests with other people, in the hope that they can gain some new information they find interesting. Hopefully it will inspire them to learn about different areas of medicine they had not yet considered, send in their own article for the next edition, or maybe even decide they want to carry the magazine on once we’ve left KEHS.

When might we be able to expect the next edition?

We’re aiming to publish a new edition every term, so keep your eyes peeled!
